How do you afford CGRP meds?
Post Body

UPDATE: Thank you for all the replies! I spent a lot of time on the phone today, but most importantly, I called the Ajovy customer care line and told them the situation. They said I qualify to mail in manual reimbursement claims. This seems to be based on the state you live in. I mailed those in today and now I'll just have to wait and see if they approve it and send me the money. Regardless I will still most likely switch insurance plans next year so thank you so much for the information about what plans work for you!

Or what insurance are you on that pays for them? I am in WA state and have a silver level Kaiser Permanente Core insurance through my employer, which is basically an HMO. That means I have to do everything through Kaiser, including filling my prescriptions at their pharmacies. I've had four monthly doses of Ajovy and they don't/won't accept the manufacturer's coupon, so the cost with insurance is $426.11 a month.

If Ajovy didn't work so well, I wouldn't worry about it, but it makes a huge difference for me. I have vestibular migraines so most of my migraines attacks are really different from each other, but I often also get tension headaches, probably 15-20 a month. The first month on Ajovy I had two tension headaches and no migraines. So I'm trying to figure out how to afford this medication. I have also failed topiramate (topamax), propranolol, and while I'm currently taking venlafaxine (Effexor xr), there are so many side effects for me I would really like to be able to get off of it. I'm hoping I can figure out a way to afford Ajovy long term so I can taper of the venlafaxine, even though I know there are a lot of withdrawal symptoms.

I have tried applying for financial assistance through the manufacturer (Teva) but they rejected it. They didn't say why but I think I make too much. I know I don't qualify for the medical financial aid through Kaiser because my income is too high. My neurologist suggested trying nurx to get the medication without insurance. Nurx contracts with a service called Cove for neurology meds, but for any CGRP med, they require you to go through insurance. Which totally defeats the purpose since my insurance is the problem.

My next step is to attempt to get a nurse case manager at Kaiser to look at my medical history and see how I've failed so many migraine meds and somehow get Ajovy cheaper. I don't really know how that works or what steps I need to take to make that happen but it is what my neurologist suggested. We're both really frustrated because the drug formulary with my plan lists ALL of the CGRP meds as non-preferred, which is why my insurance charges so much for them. This includes the pills as well as the shots. From my research I think Ajovy is the cheapest med as well.

Any information you have that might help I would appreciate. If your insurance covers a lot of the cost of your prescription, which plan do you have? I am part of the team that chooses our health insurance plan (and I'm the one who writes the check to Kaiser every month) so I'm gathering info for when the renewal period comes up.

Also if you have any familiarity with getting a nurse reviewer to look at my case/history, I'd appreciate any and all help! Of course dealing with trying to afford this med has increased my number of headaches from the stress of it all.

I have gold BCBS PPO with CVS Caremark prescription coverage. Aimovig is $30/mo with my insurance coverage, down to $5/mo with the manufacturer coupon.

Good luck🍀
