I'm buying a small home built in 1900. What are some affordable ways I can give it back some of its original exterior charm?

In less than 2 weeks, this very small 123-year-old home will be all mine. Throughout the years it's been updated extensively but I'm wondering if there are some easy and affordable ways I can give some of its original charm back.

I'm going to replace the lattice skirting and paint the wood on the front deck to give that sort of a facelift, and I'm going to do some landscaping because the ground is currently a little low near the house so the mulch bed will be replaced with rock shortly. More for practicality purposes than trying to restore it.

But are there any little details I can add that would give it back some of it's early 1900s charm? Shutters or things like that?

On the inside of the house you would not know the age of the home. It's all drywall and vinyl windows and recessed lighting and Home Depot cabinets but I was wondering if there's a way I can spruce up the exterior just a little bit besides what I mentioned. Or do the aforementioned things in a way that honors its history.

I almost don't feel like this house belongs in this group because y'all are posting these beautiful victorians and such but I wonder if anybody else is in a situation like this. It's an extremely modest 950sqft 2br 1 bath in a small rural Iowa town.

But, honestly, if it were me, I would focus on making the flower gardens at that house so beautiful, that no one notices how plain and generic the outside of the house is. It’s the same way rather plain people can look amazing with jewelry and accessories. You may have heard the phrase, “a face that can really take makeup”; your house is a house that can really take flowers. Congratulations on your new home!
