What’s this wall pattern?

I’ve found this pattern in my 1920s western NY home in both the kitchen and bathroom.
No idea what it is. It’s painted, obviously. When I tap on it it sounds like the same plaster everywhere else.
Was this a pressed on pattern when the plaster was still wet? Or is this something I’ll need to remove when I go to paint?
