I used to be a Republican. I recently took a political compass test and I was literally right in the middle. I honestly consider either candidate in a race if they're moderate.
The biggest extreme wing of the Democrat party are the socialists. Perhaps SJW Twitter. In the 2020 Primary, the two big leftist candidates, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, I don't they ever even reached 50% combined. There was a panic that Sanders would keep coasting off of close pluralities for winner-take-all states, but a bunch of people dropped out and ultimately Biden was nominated polling at like 60% near the end.
Granted he was an incumbent without a serious challenger, but in 2020 the GOP overwhelmingly nominated Trump. I could go on and on but like, seriously, a KKK member endorsed him and it took a week of soft interview responses for him to actually denounce the guy. He got 94% of the vote. Since 2020 he, yes, tried to overthrow an election and egged on a mob to intimidate lawmakers to do so. We've also recently discovered that, after Biden was sworn in, he asked a congressman to rescind the election and reinstate him as president. He also apparently wanted to BOMB MEXICO.
Even still, after all that, about 70% of Republicans approve of him.
I get that there are already a million posts attacking Trump and the GOP. I don't really like Biden either. But while the Democrat Party has a problem with teachers unions, wokescolds, and Bernie bros, they don't represent a majority of Democrats who are often more moderate black and suburban voters. The Republican Party however, for all intents and purposes, IS the party of Trump. It's a cult of personality that embraces extreme conspiracy theories and changes what they believe based on their authoritarian leaders' whims.
Illhan Omar made a distasteful tweet about the Israeli government's influence in foreign policy saying it's "all about the Benjamins." Marjorie Taylor Greene attended a white nationalist conference.
Many Democrats at first were cynical that the COVID vaccines were rushed by the Trump administration (but then started to trust them). My uncle literally believes Bill Gates puts microchips in them.
Radicalism is (I suspect due to social media) generally getting worse in America. And it is getting worse in both parties. But Democrats are still capable of nominating a sane, relatively moderate candidate. When I see the absurd conspiracy theories and borderline racist posts some of my conservative relatives share on Facebook, I don't have any hope the Republican party can do the same.
