How can I switch to T-Mobile from AT&T with an iPhone 5?

At first I had one of AT&T's cheapest plans which was about $116 a month for 1GB of data on phone and 1GB on a mobile hotspot. Now since I don't have wifi at my house anymore, I use my cellular data a lot and have gone over plenty of times. I can no longer afford it. I was thinking about unlocking my phone via a third party and sending it to T-Mobile to switch over to one of their plans (unlimited data on phone and 2GBs on mobile hotspot for $85). I am not sure if that would work, how else I can switch without paying so much. I already been with 3 phone company's.
