It still has a real life function in Madeline's world. This dream helps her get actual closure and move past her pain of losing Granny. But the other thing to it is, when she wakes up, she videochats with Theo and it's clear that they had not talked in a long time and Theo was a little put off by this. Madeline explains herself and why she had not been in touch all this time. But at least now they were speaking again. My interpretation here is that the closure she got in the dream helped her enough that she was in a better place and more willing to either answer or reach out to Theo. If she doesn't have that dream, or have that ending to the dream, maybe her and Theo continue to drift apart and she loses that connection. And for a person with her issues, Theo is an important part of her support system.
So, even though you did all that running around in Farewell for an "it was just a dream," ending, that ending still shows us ways in which that dream had a real impact on her waking life. Something that like a Super Mario Bros 2 or Little Nemo: Dream Master, was never really willing or able to attempt with their "just a dream" plotlines. It's amazing the things this game pulled off that no other game I know of really did.
