Free Packet Tracer Lab -- Find the Imposter(s) in a L2 topology
Post Body

Hey all,

I'm releasing my first packet tracer lab to the world. The lab is a "real world" scenario where you are informed there is a MAC address that is behaving maliciously, and you are responsible for finding the malicious host and shutting down their switchport.

You can download the packet tracer lab here: https://www.practicalnetworking.net/stand-alone/packet-tracer-labs/#challenges

There is a video walk through & introduction to the lab topology and instructions here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-R2j3CNpjI

(the description also has a solution video if you need)

The lab can be done using Packet Tracer 8.1 (8.0 will work, but see this PSA)

This scenario wraps itself around a common interview question: Given a bad acting IP or MAC, how would you find where they are in your network?

I've asked this when conducting interviews, and it's a solid way to identify whether the candidate actually understands Networking and how to navigate their way through Routers and Switches.

Looking for feedback on this lab and this type of content:

  • What do you think of this lab?
  • Do you enjoy this type of content?
  • Would you be interested in more "real world" scenario based packet tracer labs like this?
  • Would you be interested in more "interview" scenario based packet tracer labs like this?
