Taking too much damage as Caustic: How can I remedy that?

Caustic is the character I enjoy playing the most but lately I have been not doing so well with him. I find myself unable to evade shots and also having issues dueling other characters without getting lasered instantly. I genuinely haven't ever seen footage of expert Caustics playing so I have no frame of reference of what I should be doing or shouldn't.
What can I do to improve that?

I second this. I don’t use shotguns much unless I get the attachments near where I picked it up or it gets switched out with a long range gun. Hitbox is just too big to fight close range most of the time unless you are bunkered.
