An infuriating tale from Kings Canyon

I'm in the #2 pick position. #1 insta picks Caustic. No problem, maybe they enjoy conducting experiments too. Their banner indicates they are relatively new to him, but not to the game (level 60 something but only 20 kills).
We engage in a few fights together, the final one being a nailbiter with 1v1 from remaining squaddies. We lost.
Never dropped a single trap or threw a gas nade. Not once. Ever. The whole game.
How can you conduct experiments without any independent variables?!
