Just passed eight hours of trying to find a player... at stage 4.

Like the title says, I am trying to auto advance out of this very early stage but there is an empty spot in my ladder and has been for the last 8 hours. Another in my gang experienced something similar, albeit at a higher stage, for over 12 hours.
Anyone else experiencing something similar? Is this a bug? Are less people playing to the point that there aren't enough players to fill these spots?
