Adopted a 2.5mo/old kitten. How to bathe?

I’ve had cats & kittens before (they’re all gone now though) and this kitten is from a friend. He (I assume) has thinning fur, a bent tail, and smells like poop only on his butt.
The vet check-up, deworming, & injections are being scheduled, but I got him today and wanna bathe him.
What can I use to clean him as well as improve the thinning fur situation?
