cat given ear drops, now has brown paws and itchy ears

Took our 6 month old BSH to the vet as he'd been itching his ears. They thought a possible ear infection/yeast, so gave him canaural drops. We've applied accordingly, but his fur around his paws where he cleans and itches, and around his ear is a brown colour. He also seems to really go for an itch/clean for a bit after it's applied. Just want to check if this is normal and if anyone has anything to add that might be worthwhile?
