13 year old male cat lost half its body weight in a month, started acting lethargic and mewling strangely last night. Took him to ER vet and spent $1000 to diagnose DKA from undiagnosed diabetes. The treatment requires hospitalization and can cost at most $12,000. Cat is healthy outside of all of this and a fighter and I know he'll pull through with the proper treatment. I am morally opposed to killing an animal because of financial reasons, especially is recovering rate is 70% successful. I exhausted my savings at the ER vet. What resource are out there? My credit is ok but not good enough to get a $10,000 loan. Can I surrender the cat to a no kill shelter? Any organizations that help with this sort of thing? Is it crazy to try and do it at home ?I'm in Minnesota if that helps. Thank you.
