Can't pick up items by using examine anymore?

Before i always just used K to examine a corpse or item on the ground and then pick up stuff that way. Now i can't seem to be able to do it anymore. "nothing to examine" it says when there are items on the ground near me.

What happened? Why was this changed? This is extremely annjoying especially since i could take items that were too heavy to carry or i did not have space for, and i'd automatically get a choice to wield them or not. Now i have to press W then manually select an item that would be too big otherwise, to wield.
