How to make a ramp?

I made a downstair that allowed me to go up and down between Z levels but i can't figure out how to make a ramp that allows vehicles to travel with me.
I found the option to build a concrete ramp, but that requires a "shallow pit"
So i dug a pit once but that wasn't enough, so i dug on same tile again and now i have the option to enter the "pit" (i remain on the same Z level) but it still doesn't allow me to build the ramp and i can't dig further.
What am i missing?
