RD-767AV Help?

Hello, I recently just got a SHARP RD-767 AV and I can't get sound to come out of my bookshelf speakers. I tried connecting my aux cable into both the mix and AUX ports I head the feedback sound when you plug them in but when I press play it still comes from the cassette player's speakers. Maybe you simply just can't connect them, the circuit may just be bad or I need something special to connect them???? I have Bastian SR04 speakers. Looking forward to responses. :)
