Looking for a first car, but my parents seem to think manual transmissions are the devil
Post Body

Hi r/cars, I'll give some background before I ask my question. I'm 16 and have had my driver's license for about 6 months now, and the time is fast approaching for me to get my first car. I have enough money saved to get a reasonably priced vehicle, and at this point there is only one obstacle, my parents. They have agreed to pay insurance, which I cannot afford, in the condition that the car is to their liking. They prefer I get a station wagon that my dad can use for his work occasionally, which I don't have a problem with. I have kinda had my heart set on a Subaru for some time, and they seem to be the best at making wagons, which I need. I would also like a manual transmission so I can learn, and also because I would like a more interesting driving experience, which Subaru also does well. The thing is, my Dad has an extreme prejudice towards imported cars (he has never owned a non-american vehicle), and my mother completely disagrees with me owning any type of manual transmission; her reason being that it's just another thing to worry about and will likely cause me to crash. Although I'm sure I would be able to sway my Dad on the whole import thing if I found a good deal (he cares about money alot more than personal prejudices), the problem is convincing my Mom that it's a good idea to own a stick shift. Any suggestions for convincing her?
