Hiring help means letting go what we have
Post Body

Hi, first time posting on the thread and I hope you don't mind this is more of a rant- Don't know where else to share this story where people will understand and possibly give some insight.

3 months ago we had a friend move in with us to help me. I'm going to have surgery soon and my family had been living in a trailer for 3 years, but because of the upcoming surgery we made the decision to rent a house and do work exchange for live-in care.

I was nervous having someone I didn't know live with us, so I asked a person I knew from HS to help. She has her own physical limitations, but I chose her over the other candidates because I already knew her.

What I've learned is that she is trying to be my "best friend" and buys me and the baby (I've a 2yr old) stuff that we don't need and wants to go to the bar (to sing karaoke). Thing is, all the stuff I've asked her to do she isn't doing; in fact I find myself cleaning, cooking and caring for her... Then my husband pays her every week.

I have asked her to move out for 2 months now, and she told me that she wouldn't need to. She would be able to accommodate my needs. So I asked her to step up on those needs, and she continues to do less.

She's at the point where she's stopped showing up to work! How can someone live in the same house and not show for work? She says it's because she's too sore. I told her today that I'm interviewing new applicants, and asked her to speak to someone about moving.

She will need to be out by Thanksgiving.

That's about a week away, and I feel bad for not giving her 30 days notice, but I have told her for 60 days now that this position isn't working for her. The internet says "asking a friend to move out doesn't have a set time" and we'd be kind enough to help her move her things.

It's been a struggle, to say the least, and I'm shocked that someone I thought I knew would treat this position this way. I feel very taken advantage of.

She calls me her best friend, and I am confused, because this is not the way I would treat my friends.
