Does the “more experienced” candidate always get the job?

Hi All!

I applied for an internal position and am quite a long while into the process. It’s down to me and one other candidate now.

This candidate is external but has 2 years of direct experience in the role…and a Masters degree.

I do not. Honestly, I have 0 years of DIRECT experience. I have a BA and a ton of transferable skills. The job I am applying for requires many soft skills and it is helpful to know the ins-and-ours of the company prior to assuming this role. I am an internal candidate.

I really care about this job, the team, the company, and I think I’d do very well. I have the support of my managers and my HR team.

I don’t want to psych myself out, but I’m worried about my chances. If I was in their shoes, it would be difficult to pass on someone with proven abilities over someone who would be learning quite a bit.

So…does the “more experienced” candidate always get the job?

Thanks all.
