I went to University in Toronto. I have a 4 bachelors degree in Film Studies but Iāve spent many years since graduation bouncing around and working odd jobs. I graduated about 9 years ago. Mostly crappy customer service jobs and I honestly canāt even work in customer service anymore. Iām totally burnt out from that line of work and really want to move on.
I do work in film production as a self employed person but, the income I make from it is unpredictable and not enough for me to get by. Itās tough to find jobs in the film industry in Toronto, and even then, itās all gig work. The economy is rough and being a gig worker isnāt going to cut it for me at this moment in time. So Iāve essentially been doing all my film-related stuff (including as much networking as I can) in my free time. I just currently need a day job to stick to for a while so I can save money. The good thing is, I live at home still - so I can at least try to save as much money as I can.
I go online everyday to find work. I even try to find full-time corporate video jobs thatās inline with my film production skills. I apply to them all the time, but theyāre of course super competitive. Iām just trying to find a day job that I can hang onto as a primary source of income until I can have more financial freedom to figure more things out.
Does anyone have any advice in terms of trying to transition into something else that isnāt in the customer service field? I was considering a trade, but they all require going to a college of some sort and earning a licence. Iām a very tech savvy person and a fast learner. I suppose that isnāt saying much in the times we live in.
Lately, Iāve been making all of my income doing app jobs like Amazon Flex and Instacart. Itās good that youāre able to make money easily doing those things, but the wear and tear on your personal vehicle starts to get costly over time. Constantly relying on self employed app jobs gets really taxing too. Would be nice to have paid vacation days and some kind of dental benefits for a change. Iām constantly working these jobs and I really feel exhausted by them and especially feel like Iām wasting time.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
EDIT:
Forgot to mention, I took a cybersecurity course during the initial lockdown. I didnāt end up passing the CompTIA exam on the first try. I ended up abandoning it but Iād be open to go back to it but I barely remember anything I studied now. I took a free full time program through an organization in Canada called NPower. It was called āJunior Security & QA Analystā. I have a certificate of completion of finishing the course but I donāt have the IT certification.
