Help - I'm not sure what to do with my life. I've gone into auditing but I feel like I'm going nowhere fast. I want to take a step back and think about where I want to go next. Some things I have considered:
I want to be in a career that develops skills. Skills that will be useful outside of the job (in my personal life, or if I wanted to start up my own business) and fairly transferrable across industries. I don't want to work for "a job", I want to work to learn and develop. Is there a job that supports me to be dynamic and flexible?
My weak points are in communication. I have a tendency to be wordy and I don't like to consult people until I can answer some questions I think they'll ask me. I am also working towards time-management, because this is a skill all jobs require.
I am where I am right now because it's safe and secure. Maybe it'll last the rest of my life, but it feels like I'm always living with that fear: "What if? What if the company doesn't want me one day?" I want to change, and build economy-proof skills and learn not to be afraid of job uncertainty. I want to develop passion and be an expert at a skill that is useful at an individual level, even in the New Economy (where jobs are becoming obsolete due to computers, technological advances, etc.) I am currently working as an auditor. I am looking at business valuation or information systems (e.g., systems analyst, I want to further develop the following:
- analytical skills
- planning and organization
- communication skills (being able to explain complicated things in simple words, being able to maintain relationships and connect, etc.)
- working with other people
- being flexible and adaptable
Some steps I am going through:
- Looking online for a list of popular careers in different industries
- Looking at job descriptions for careers in those industries and matching it with my goals
- Doing a porter's five forces analysis on careers of interest
- Doing a SWOT analysis of me
- Trying to make myself get past the fear of how everyone will see me for changing careers and how I might even need to go back to university at 24. I am very reluctant to go back to schooling before I have a taste of the career I'm looking at.
With that being said:
- Thoughts on anything else I should do? What did you do beforehand that helped you feel comfortable with something as life-changing as a career change?
- Practical (work I go into to better understand how to protect yourself, like law, IT and medicine) vs. Passion (game design where I enjoy telling stories and making things that evoke people's emotions): Which should I keep in mind?
