I'm 19, quitting CompSci at uni to do Art
Post Body

I don't even like or do software engineering. Just chose it because everyone around me wanted to live vicariously through me, so I've decided to sell a skill (not necessarily my passion) on the internet instead.

I'm wondering should I keep the degree and and use the art as a side hustle?

Comments

I pushed myself through a computer science degree and I worked in big tech for a few years. I didn’t like any of it but was going after the financial stability doing the most practical thing I could wrap my head around. I think if you’re very ambitious and driven, you can make money in other ways than the straightest shot if you have a plan.

If you’re hating compsci right now, do you picture that changing? The paycheck wasn’t worth it when I felt so unhappy making the role work when it wasn’t in alignment with me.

If you’re curious about art, start creating. Start entering festivals, documenting your work, finding internships, residencies etc.

You don’t need to make any rash decisions, but you can go part time for a semester or two to truly invest in this other avenue you’re curious about.

It’s good you have so many options, keep your mind open and don’t be afraid to go against the grain while you’re discovering what works for you.
