Somewhat long post.
My request and question is : what do I do in the meantime so that I can still have an income around $25-30/hr x 40 hr a week to make ends meet until I can land a position or I can make a living as a Maker?
Long story short I’m 43 years old and about to quit my job working for CVS as a pharmacist. Through lots and lots of therapy (and the fact I hated it from the start) I’ve realized my true passion is the process of creating things. Those things could be just about anything, but creating something physical gives me a feeling like no other.
For me, the part of it that is the purest emanation of my reason for being is the process of making or creating. I find myself losing interest the moment the making/hyper-creation element of any endeavor fades. My creations have the potential to have tremendous impact on people. The fact that it moves people, and the depth of that effect, is more a measuring stick of my capabilities and ability to fully-express my vision than an expression of my reason for being.
So my path is going to take a huge turn in the right direction. I’m applying for Exhibition Designer positions so I can fully lean into this creating, learning, and wearing multiple hats and skills. I’d also like to being making some things on the side to sell. My end goal is either Exhibit Designer or self employed Maker.
I’ve got a Bachelor’s in Chemistry, PharmD, and a certificate of general programming and database management from the local community college. I’ve also got a multitude of skills which doesn’t exactly show in my resume since I’ve only used them in my spare time as opposed to professionally.
I’m truly a Jack of all trades, but I’ve read a lot how that’s not exactly a good thing to say in a cover letter of application, even if it’s for a position where that would be an advantage. I’ve started to transition to saying Swiss Army Knife of skills, but how else can I convey skills and talents that don’t show in my professional resume?
