I will try to relate the issue without telling too much information. I know a family, well the family's children, that consistently goes without food. About a month ago the child rode her bike to my house and asked to stay since they had no food. I let her stay the weekend and bought about $10 in food. I brought it to their home and confirmed the parents indeed had no food. I set them up with a local pastor that helped them obtain food. I thought that was the end of my involvement.
This month the child showed up again and begged to stay since she had no food at home. Instead I went grocery shopping for them. I bought about a week's worth of food. What can I do to help? The child is a friend of my daughter. We are not well off and I do not mind buying food for the child but I feel there is almost no parental involvement in the household. Her father is a nice man, but he is not an educated man. We live in the country.
The children get free lunch at school. On Wednesday they get a free dinner form a church and on Sundays they get free breakfast from a church. This about the only food the children get according to their testimony and that of other children in the neighborhood. The children are underweight (at least 2 of the 3 are). There is no mother present in the home. No car. They live far away from a grocery store. No phone. No internet. Their father is slightly older, but I don't think he went to highschool~not sure~. The father is unemployed.
ANY advise...
I just dropped off a canister of oatmeal, some rice, some beans, and a little hamburger. I didn't have enough for more. ANy advice to help them long term.
Also the local food stamp office is notoriously crappy...I know from personal experience. Since he can't prove he has no work, they will make it hell to get foodstamps.
