Deck construction, where you have a selection of cards then choose a subset of them to create a deck is something almost exclusive to CCGs (collectible card games). While I love playing CCGs, I found that that their barriers to entry -- such as cost, need for preparation before play and need to stay updated with new rules/mechanics -- limited who I could play them with (and thus how often I was able to enjoy them). Deck builders (where you use a deck to make a better deck) are usually more accessible and can "scratch a similar itch", but they don't quite provide the same experience that freely selecting your cards from a larger pool does.
Being a game designer (previous experience is in escape room design), over the past 2 years I have created MonstaTama, a monster taming themed, competitive queue management and deck construction tabletop game. MonstaTama has been developed from the ground up to be played as a standalone experience with deck construction being the core part of gameplay. MonstaTama allows up to 4 players to express their ingenuity through deck construction, without any preparation before play and with just one copy of the game.
There are plans for a physical release in the future, but the game is available to play now, for free, on Tabletop Simulator (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2891690733) or screentop.gg (https://screentop.gg/@RobertDruant/MonstaTama).
If you are interested in the game, consider joining the discord server: https://discord.gg/jHnUYZKdPb. Drop-in games happen every Thursday at 8:00pm EST, but if you post in #looking-for-players I'm happy to find other times to show people the game as well.
