tl;dr Dealership trying to change 5k of 10k down payment from credit card to check after I left with financing completed and the car. I'm looking for advice on how to deal with this situation.
Full story: Yesterday, I purchased a used vehicle from a large dealership. While working with the sales rep I asked if I could use a credit card for the down payment. He says yes but it is capped at 5k. I was pleasantly surprised and said I would be doing that. I was also pre-approved by my credit union for 5.99% interest rate but gave them an opportunity to provide the financing as well since I'll be paying it off pretty quickly and it is my understanding that they make money on the financing.
They matched the credit union and I finalized the loan with the finance manager and I wrote a check for 5k and put another 5k on my card. I ran the credit card in his office and he knew it was a credit card. I left with the car. I also did not trade in a car.
Today, I get a call from the same finance manager saying oops, they need a check or debit card for the 5k put on the credit card as Capital One Finance does not allow a credit card to be used for a down payment. I was pretty indignant with them calling me on New Year's day after a done deal.
I explained that I paid the 5k and did not finance it and asked where in the contract it said I could not use a credit card towards the down payment. He says it's not in the contract, it is an agreement they have with Capital One and a bunch of other banks (Chase, Ally, etc.). I said if that was the case I would have just used my credit union.
We are in a stalemate now with me telling them if they want the car back we can unwind the deal or they can offer me an incentive to change my financing or down payment method. Either way, I'm not driving back there and spending a bunch of time fixing their problem.
The sales rep is now texting me trying to pickup a check and I'm asking what they can offer me in exchange for this terrible customer experience.
I'm hoping this group might have advice regarding this situation.
Thanks
Update:
After some very dramatic texting they agreed to deliver a set of all weather mats and a cargo cover in exchange for my check. They never once apologized.
I will be calling the gm about their lack of customer service once a deal is supposedly completed. Hopefully they can respond better the next time this or something like this happens.
Thanks to everyone who responded, I appreciated the diversity of responses and the attempts to maintain a civil discourse.
At the end of the day, I'm glad I have the car. Stay safe y'all.
Playing devils advocate… why put the $5K down payment on a credit card in the first place? Rolling the $5K @ 5.99% into your loan might make more sense. I am sure your credit card interest rate is much higher…

Definitely fuck them for the principle and shadiness of it. The car buying process is stressful enough as it is…
