I very lightly brushed a car while parking at Costco. So light that when I got out of the car to see if there was any damage I couldnāt see any. My car didnāt have any marks either. The owner of the other vehicle came, I accepted fault. The other party wanted 500$ for ādamagesā. I thought that was ridiculous since the damage is not even a scratch on the rubber portion above the tires. I said Iāll pay 200$ cash and am happy to refer him to a place that would fix it for that amount. He was adamant about wanting $500 since thatās what his deductible is. I thought it wasnāt fair. I work from home and probably drive 10 miles a month and so did not maintain car insurance. I stay in California and itās expensive here. I know Iām supposed to have car insurance. Iām wrong for not having it. I had a copy of the insurance from two months ago which shows the policy runs through next year but I cancelled it recently and so at the time of the accident I didnāt have insurance. I shared the policy that I had cancelled with the other party. I also shared my driver license. When I asked them for their license they refused to share it and didnāt share their insurance info either. Both parties left the scene without getting cops involved so thereās no police report. The guy filed a claim on the spot with his insurance and didnāt want cash when I offered. Now itās been four days since the incident and I havenāt received any call from any insurance company about the incident. The other party had my contact number and license and still have not contacted me. Their insurance mustāve reached out to mine and realized I donāt have the insurance since I cancelled the policy.
What should I expect to happen next ? Does the event hold any weight if thereās no police report? What can I do from my end besides maintain insurance going forward ? Will the other party sue me? Sharing a pic of his car. Thereās some white scratch on the rubber portion right above the tire but thatās it. Thereās no damage to the actual car metal or body. My car has no scratches at all. Should I expect to get sued by this guy? I noticed yesterday he saw my LinkedIn profile and heās a corporate attorney. Does that complicate the situation ? What should I expect to happen ?
