I learned about this 7 portage route: The Seven Carries – A Classic Adirondack Paddle (townsandtrails.com)Seems an inspiration.
- What other routes might be interesting, suitable, for a month excursion next year? I'm also inquiring about Maine routes, considering Boundary Waters and Lake Superior, and looking at stringing together kayak routes in the Chesapeake. But this post is about these delicate portage routes.
- My boats are too heavy for portage routes. I tend to think they're too heavy regardless! So I'm looking to put together a light boat for myself. I can build anything, but don't want to spend forever and a fortune. I've got an arbitrary weight limit of 25 lbs, and a total displacement of 250 lbs. Load to be carried along with a boat at a max of 50 lbs. That works out to boat plus 20 lbs and another trip of 30 lbs. Day trips would be rather light.
- An alternative is to find a companion and take a light tandem canoe. I can certainly make a tandem canoe that I can carry with a tumpline and lines for and aft (I've done it with a 70 lb canoe and immense suffering).
Boats currently under consideration are:
Sassafras 12: Sassafras 12 Pack Canoe: 26-pound Lapstrake Double-Paddle Canoe That You Can Build! (clcboats.com) at 26 lbs - I might be able to shave a little weight, but not much.
Cape Falcon 66: Video Course Plans: Skin-on-Frame Canoe Building – Cape Falcon Kayak (cape-falcon-kayak.myshopify.com)I'm having a difficult time figuring out what a suitable boat would weigh. A suitable boat might well be 13 ft. Custom sizing is nice. But brings that weight uncertainty.
Geodesic aerolite 14, either Arrow 14 - Geodesic AiroLITE Boats (gaboats.com) or SnowShoe 14 - Geodesic AiroLITE Boats (gaboats.com) These are 19-20 lbs. Wind concern.
I'd love to find someone to do these trips with.
