Driving from Merida to Cancun in A Rental Car - how to avoid being scammed?
Post Body

I’ve read so many terrible posts on here about being scammed by police, gas stations and rental car companies in Cancun.

Any high level tips to avoid?

Should I carry bribe money on me?

Are there certain areas where there are targeted traps?

Also I am returning a rental car with some minor damage to the black plastic grill. I’ve already gotten a quote from a collision company and it would be around $200 USD to fix.

Im happy to pay this but I’m fearful the rental car agency will charge me 10x that. They were an absolute nightmare to deal with in merida and have a 1.6 star rating because they consistently scam ppl for every little thing.

Do you think 1,000 Mx pesos might be enough of a “tip” to get the rental car worker to give me a clean drop off voucher?

For the record I did not pick up the car in Cancun and the damage slip already had some pre existing damage in the same place.

My flight isn’t until 9pm, how much time should I give myself at the rental car agency knowing there might be some bullshit to deal with while dropping off? The pick up was 2.5 hours of arguing about fraudulent insurance and extras they tried to tack on.

Thanks in advance
