In Cancun for four days earlier last month (Nov23) We booked a car online with easy way rental. Our trip went smoothly, and I'll highlight some areas to help future travellers.
We landed in Cancun terminal 3 early afternoon. Customs and baggage were easy. Ignore offers of help or advice from anyone once you get past customs. It's all a scam. As soon you exit the baggage claim area there is an HSBC cash machine on your left (in front of all the airport-based rental companies like Hertz etc). It's best to get some cash here. It will likely give you big bills, but you can get change at the resort. Don't pay with USD and don’t change USD to pesos at the resort, you won't get a better rate than the ATM.
If you've rented a car and they say they will pick you up from the airport, be very careful with whom you get in the car. People will straight up lie and tell you they work for the company. If you ask people for help, they will also send you 100% in the wrong direction, hoping to frustrate you.
As soon as you exit terminal 3 (i.e., fresh air), there is a cafe called Berryhill on your left. Turn towards Berryhill and you should see your easy way driver with your name on a piece of A4 paper. Easy way rentals have a WhatsApp number on their site. Save it on your phone beforehand. There is free Wi-Fi at the airport. Call them if you can't find the driver.
Getting to the rental car was pretty much the most stressful part.
Easy way rental will charge you in Pesos. I found a multi-currency credit card (WISE)the easiest way to pay. Took the full insurance option. They put an additional 5000 pesos on hold as excess. Apart from here, I haven't used my credit card anywhere else. Card skimming is prolific here, and this sub has many horror stories already. If you must use an ATM, but the bigger bank ATMS, not independent ATMS. Always pull the card reader hard to make sure a skimmer isn’t installed.
We drove to the resort, and I changed 1 of my $500 peso notes to 25x $20 peso notes for tipping. It's not necessary, but nice to do as the local workers are used to this horrid American practice.
Do not leave your valuables in your room. Put them in the safe provided or hide them well. Any cash left visible in the room will be assumed as a tip for the room service ladies—even coins.
Use only small notes when paying for fuel. Check the price entered at the pump is the same on surrounding pumps (and the road display if there is one) stick to more prominent companies - BP etc. Watch the pump and make small talk if you can with the attendant.
If you use any of the toll roads, be sure to have enough CASH Pesos before you get on the highway. The tolls from Cancun to Chichen Itza was around 1000 pesos for a round trip. The tolls will not accept USD or Credit cards.
I will write another post on how to survive the scammers in Chechen Itza later.
