Anyone else on Xeloda?
Post Body

Hi, so I just finished my first round of Xeloda. I have terminal cancer and this will be my 13th different type of chemo. I had very little or no response to the others.

I find the Xeloda very easy to tolerate compared to the others. With the exception of burns to my hands, feet and mouth. My feet are so badly burned I can barely walk. I have Band-Aids on most of my fingers because of the burns. Also, I am having problems swallowing food. It has to be soft and even then I need to swallow milk with food to get it down.

My oncologists are lowering the dose but they said burns are normal with this drug. I'm taking a week break then I start round two. It seems to be working, my liver is smaller and less painful but my god, I can't walk or use my hands. Anyone else out there on this drug? And how do you deal with the burns? Thank you for reading.

Have you tried just Imodium? I get the diarrhea and nausea occasionally, but a half a pill of Imodium worked better than the zofran for me.

I'm on Xeloda for maintenance, 4 g /day. Have been doing 2 weeks on and 1 off since November I think. I was told right when I started that urea based lotion works wonders for the hand & foot syndrome that accompanies Xeloda. It's done an okay job. My feet are constantly sluffing off the top layer of skin, but I don't have any sores. I think that may be because I've taken to wearing comfy wool blend socks and shoes or boots that fit so that my feet have no room to slide around. Last week I wore a looser pair and couldn't walk after like 3 pm.

My hands are doing better than my feel. Some skin peeling, but no deep cracks. I put lotion on about every hour and a half though. My hands always feel like I'm wearing nitrile gloves a size too small though, sorta like my hands are trying to break through my skin. It's a weird feeling. Neuropathy in my thumbs and forefingers only though.

But the Xeloda works, and I'm willing to tolerate it as long as possible.

Don't really have any issues eating other than decreased appetite. It's the fatigue after taking the pills that gets me. In the mornings the caffeine from coffee fires an alright job, but at dinner it really hits and I'm worthless for a few hours. If somehow I managed to stay awake past 9 it settles down and I'm tired but not feeling that extreme fatigue.
