Post Body

Cross-posting this from my Facebook. I'll try to answer questions, but will be somewhat slow.

Also, I've seen people threatening to gild/platinum/etc. Do not spend money doing that. Donate it to one of the gun orgs--any one of them. Again, I don't need Reddit jewelry here. Put your money somewhere useful, if you're inclined to spend it.

So, I'm getting a million pings on this one, and I'm going to try to answer them all at once. None of the below should be relied on as legal advice, and my dog died a couple of days ago, so I'm doing my best. Let's say this hasn't been the best week for me.

Key elements of this legislation:

-They have banned a list of guns broadly describable as follows (check the legislation for specifics):

  • SG 550 and SG 551 (including Swiss Arms)
  • AR-15, M16, AR10, M4
  • The Mini-14, and the Mini-30.
  • Vz 58
  • XCR
  • CZ Scorpion
  • Beretta Storm carbine
  • MCX carbine, pistol, etc.
  • Any firearm larger than 20mm in diameter. They specifically list a variety of grenade and missile launchers, but note this one for your own records: The grenade launcher (that stupid tube) on a Yugo SKS is 22m in diameter. So it's in there.
  • Any firearm /capable/ of discharging a projectile with more than 10k joules.
  • The upper receiver of any M16, AR15, M4, AR10 is now a prohibited device.

So, what does this mean? Effective immediately, a lot of Canadian law abiding gun owners are criminals, but for the amnesty also declared, which lasts for two years. This amnesty is in place in order to allow them to figure out a buy-back (which they have absolutely no money for now due to COVID) and/or a grandfathering program. As of right now, though, no one is grandfathered.

What can you do with the guns right now? Very little. Transfer them to someone who can lawfully possess them, which is almost no one, take them in for destruction, a few other things. It's unclear, and I'm going to need to do some further research as to whether your existing ATTs will continue to apply, but expect that revocations are going out in the mail. I suspect that the CFOs offices have just revoked any "work at home" options for the next little while. In the middle of a global pandemic, Trudeau and his cronies have decided to pass laws knowing that it's difficult for us to protest right now. But, the big thing you can do with them right now is hang onto them.

Will there be grandfathering? No idea. Will there be a buy-back? No idea. But it means that it may not be a great time to turn in your guns, because these things may be coming.

Note the "upper receiver" thing, because if you had thought that you'd just turn in a stripped lower, that's not going to bring you in compliance, and if your AR-15 is not registered as a stripped lower, they know you've got the upper. And holding onto a prohibited firearm/device is not adviseable or smart.

So, what does this mean for public safety? Absolutely nothing.

I can go out today and buy any number of guns that are pretty much identical to most of these categories. This is an idiotic, feel-good law of the worst variety.

What does this mean for hunters and farmers?

Well, I know a lot of big game hunters who hunt with large caliber rifles, some of which just got banned. Note the "capable of" discharging something over 10k joules. Expect that to mean a ton of uncertainty for large caliber rifles going forward, because some are clearly now banned (.50 caliber rifles), as well as things like the 460 Weatherby (you know, the large game hunting rifle caliber). The mini-14 and mini-30 are both popular hunting and farming rifles.

What does this mean for Aboriginal people:

Well, the SKS is an incredibly popular rifle on reserves, because it's reliable, inexpensive, and can certainly be hunted with. Some of those SKSes are Yugos, which suddenly hit the prohib status. Same for the mini-14 and mini-30. Expect to see a whole lot of people prosecuted for charges that, IMO, are some bullshit.

There's going to be a lot of collectors impacted as well. Grenade launchers are a pretty common item for collectors, and have been zero problem because the actually dangerous part (the bit that goes boom) is incredibly controlled, and a launcher is mostly just a length of pipe.

What this will mean for mass shootings:

Absolutely nothing.
