So, I'm sure everyone has read the letter at this point.
At this point it's not clear whether this is the result of the RCMP pushing the issue, or whether there was a court decision that they're relying on. I haven't been able to find a court decision, but it may not have been reported yet, or may just be unreported period.
Is this a correct statement of the law? Maybe. The question is whether or not you want to be the person to fight it. If fighting the court case isn't in your budget, then you're likely stuck going along with it.
Note that the view of the RCMP is that these things are not only firearms now, but that they have always been. This means that destroying one doesn't really get you off the hook, because if they are correct about these being firearms you would be required to report the destruction to a peace officer or firearms officer.
Yeah, I'm pretty annoyed too.
