Question about government radio ads
Post Body

Hey guys,

I recently heard the government radio ad (on CHOM, in Montreal) about oil sands. I never listen to the radio or watch TV anymore, but the ad shocked me because it seemed to have basically no actual content.

Correct me if I am wrong (which I hope to be), but the main lines seemed to be:

  • We have oil sand which can be exploited
  • The government assures us we will do this in a safe/eco-friendly way
  • If shit hits the fan, companies and not tax payers will pay the bill.

The problem I have with this ad is that its only purpose seems to be to reassure the population that if we exploit our natural resources, we will do it in a cautious way. My immediate reaction hearing the ad was "wait, was this propaganda?"

Why would they need an ad to reassure people at large of stuff like this?
