My therapist and psychitrist would ask me to try to stop picking. They gave me strategies like sitting on my hands or fidgeting with something. I would try my hardest but end up eventually giving into the urge. This would make me feel bad about myself because I wasn't hitting my goals. I realized my goals were too high. This week I noticed a new pimple start growing in that I really, really wanted to eliminate like I usually do. Instead, I set my goal for this week to be just not picking this ONE pimple. Everything else was fair game. It's been a week and I have succeeded so far, and the pimple is already receding. I don't remember the last time I let a pimple go away on its own. The point is, I was able to set a smaller goal and feel rewarded for meeting that goal. This rewarding feeling is really helpful in the recovery process. I wanted to share my experience for those who are struggling to gain momentum in the recovery process. Please update me if this ends up working for you!
tl;dr: if you're having trouble quitting cold turkey, try by choosing just one small area to ignore (a pimple, the skin on one fingernail, one scab, etc.). It will be easier to hit your goal and you'll feel more rewarded/less defeated after.
