Anyone else pick to "make it smooth"?

Post Body

Just like the title says, I often pick be because of stress but then as it starts the heal the roughness bothers me so I repick to "make it smooth". Idk why it's just satisfying even though it hurts. Any tips on how to get me to stop? Ive done bandaids which works for awhile but then when I take it off the skin is all dried up and makes me want to do it.

Help ):

i know exactly what you mean. i try to think of it like an optical illusion that iā€™m seeing the wrong way. it is faster (and within your control, which is the real appeal for me) to ā€œmake it smoothā€ by creating more negative space around the ā€œhole.ā€ But the skin you remove around it is not an excess, the hole is a deficiency. There is no smooth skin under there, just raw dermis and blood. Sometimes I tell myself out loud ā€œthereā€™s nothing under thereā€ if I feel locked on and I need that push of reason to knock me off.

We are often driven by a desire for a sense of completeness. You need to disabuse yourself of the notion that you can create or take credit for that. Closure in this journey is possible but it requires trusting the onboard healing mechanisms your ancestors spent millions of years fine-tuning over your not always so brilliant ideas. You will still feel an urge to act but you need to replace your response to that stimulus with something that will actually help, like moisturizing your hands, oiling your cuticles, or gently exfoliating with something that isnā€™t your teeth. GENTLY. good luck.
