Idea for first homebrew campaign.

I've been toying with a homebrew campaign set in modern times, with some of the plot points revolving around a faux 'Oasis (Ready Player One), and it being a platform developed by cultists of an Elder One of my creation that manifests itself via emerging technologies. Only part of the campaign can take place in this VR-scape, or it will detract from the real horror aspects. But I'm looking for some ideas from you fine folks on some creepy/cool things I can do with it. Maybe even some ideas on plot points or the Elder being itself.
