I'm struggling at the moment with too much multitasking leading to mistakes. But there are also times when there's nothing to do so I'm on Reddit all day. It's feast or famine... or feels more like drinking-from-a-firehose or famine!
I know multitasking is part and parcel of the job. But it frequently gets to be too much and I make mistakes. Nearly always little mistakes, nothing that costs money, but I feel they discredit me or make me look like I can't handle the job. It's like "after you update the document, make a note in the tracker spreadsheet so we know it's done, that's not hard to remember", but in reality it's more like:
Update document1, update tracker, reply to email, make suggested changes to document1, wait for people to review it, reply to email, chase down something my manager asked me for, update document2, do something else my manager asked me to do, make suggested changes to document 1, reply to client email, get on the phone with a coworker, make suggested changes to document2, start drafting document3 after email from manager indicates urgency of getting this release done asap, ask team to review changes to document2, enter new change request into ticket system, impromptu meeting with team about document1, do more work on document3, finalize the approved document1, revise the change request in the ticket system because someone doesn't like the wording, make more changes to document2.... etc. all day long.
And then randomly for the next four weeks we find mistakes I've made today during this process. Like note how many times I updated the tracker above? And that's just for one release. We're currently working on two releases simultaneously, and I'm the only BA and yes, I'm required to handle both releases.
One thing I thought of is to do some kind of "daily rundown" in the last 15 minutes of the day to review and see if there's anything I forgot to do or follow up on. I'm not sure how much that will help because by the end of the day my eyes are crossed and the reason I make the mistakes in the first place is because I don't see them anymore. But I could try. Anything else you guys do that lowers your rate-of-making-small-mistakes?
