I've been a business analyst for seven years and was a software engineer for 20 years before that, so I'm not new. However, I am doubting myself... wondering if I'm sloppy and likely to take this to other employers if I don't fix myself or if it's just the current environment that's bad. Here's what's happening:
I participate with end users, other business analysts, SME's and developers to design a software solution. We come up with something that we think will work. The solutions always have two components: a UI that enables external users to enter data, and a set of data processing documentation. We sell the data that is entered into our systems, so the data processing documentation (DPD) is very important. It's not anything "standard" like XML or API (application interface). It's required to be a unique-to-this-company format, and long-winded prose. Drafting and publishing this documentation is my job.
So after we design a solution, I will draft the DPD. Typically, we review the solution with a slightly larger internal team, and that results in changes. So I revise the DPD. We'll run the solution past our external users in a formal working group meeting and that results in changes, so I revise the DPD again. Then we have to review it internally again... revise the DPD. Before we can publish the DPD, we have two groups of SME's who aren't part of our solution team who insist on also reviewing, resulting in changes and revising the DPD. Each internal group of people wants to review independently of the others (political) so I'm unable to combine them all into one unified review meeting.
Anyway, the more I have to change the DPD, the more mistakes are found in it. Everything from trivial mistakes like incorrect words/phrasing to old decisions from prior reviews that I should have taken out but missed, to missing new decisions. I also have trouble keeping all of the "current" decisions in my head so when questioned if something is correct, I often struggle to remember. I have a work ethic that I strive to do things right the first time, so this entire process is beyond frustrating. I'm looking for another job but I am wondering if most places are like this or if it's just this place. Thoughts?
