Build request/help - Building a rig with my son for his 14th birthday

Post Body

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

  • The point of the build is to serve as a birthday present for my son at the end of August, while also teaching him how to do a build himself (component research, compatibility, etc.). This will also be my first AMD build, so there's that. I don't plan on buying him another setup for the foreseeable future, so the intent is for this setup to last as long as possible while not breaking the bank. :) My son plays mostly on the PS4 (Rainbow Six Siege, Borderlands 3, Destiny 2, etc.) but does play PC games that are shared on my Steam account (Doom Eternal, Team Fortress 2). He's currently playing mostly FPS and action/adventure games (Ghosts of Tsushima, Uncharted, Sly Cooper, etc.) but will play just about anything.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

  • I'm pretty flexible, but don't want to go overboard. $1,000 for the components, maybe? The point is to allow my son to have a great experience playing game at 1080p or 1440p with reasonable graphics quality while not breaking the bank. I have no budget in mind for for the monitor, keyboard, or mouse, so I'm flexible.

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

  • Ordering in the next week, want to build by the end of August. Since I'm living overseas, parts ordered from the US can take 1-2 weeks to arrive to my APO box on base.

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

  • ATX mid tower case
  • Processor: I was leaning towards the Ryzen 3600XT as it's a great "bang for your buck" with added overclocking ability
  • Motherboard: Leaning towards an X570 chipset. AORUS Elite, perhaps?
  • RAM: Probably 16GB (2 x 8GB) for starters
  • SSD
  • Video Card: RTX 2060? 5600 XT? I have always preferred NVIDIA cards due to driver stability having G-Sync monitors, but since I won't be the one using the computer, I'll take the best card for the money.
  • PSU
  • Monitor
  • Mouse
  • Keyboard: Mechanical is preferable (obviously), but I don't want switches that sound like he's using a nail gun to type.
  • Optional: CPU cooler if whatever processor I buy doesn't have a stock cooler or it provides insufficient cooling, too loud, etc.

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

  • I'm an American stationed in the UK, so I have the ability to have parts shipped to my US mailing address on base, or to my UK address.

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

  • I have an unused 5TB Western Digital Black drive that I bought in 2016 that can give to my son for game storage.

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?

  • The plan was to buy a Ryzen 3600XT so that I can teach my son how to overclock, as well as extend the lifetime of the computer.

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

  • N/A

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

  • ATX mid-tower. My son has said that he's not interested in RGB, and I immediately disowned him. ;) He likes the color purple, but it's not required.

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

  • I planned on buying a copy. I believe he might have access to student pricing, so I'll check on that.

Extra info or particulars:

  • N/A
