Looking to do my first PC build, making a workstation/occasional gaming PC
Post Body

> What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

  • Primarily this is going to be my workstation for my home office. I am starting my own electrical engineering business so I will be doing almost all of the "work" applications in AutoCAD/Revit (or similar CAD/3D software). I am also going to be doing electrical coordination studies and simulations in programs such as SKM Power Analysis. I also have plans to do some video editing in the future for my YouTube channel. Since this will also be at my home I will likely be doing some occasional gaming off of it as well. Nothing crazy where I need unlimited FPS but I would like to be able to play games like GTA and not have to worry about my computer freaking out haha.

> What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

  • As I said this will be for my business primarily so, at risk of sounding stuck-up, budget is not a major concern. Ideally something that is in the range of a few thousand dollars (Let's just say $4,000 USD). I know good high-end computer parts are expensive and I am totally fine dragging out my build if I have to extend my budget, my main goal is something that will perform how I need it to and perform consistently for a good while.

> When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

  • I probably will not begin purchasing anything for a couple of months. I first need to do a full renovation of the office in my home and then I plan to start building the PC setup.

> What exactly do you need included in the budget?

  • The tower build is the main component I am concerned with right now. Eventually I am planning a new mouse, building a mechanical keyboard, new monitors (probably going to be 2 or 3 depending on size), etc. but I have some old ones I can use in the beginning while I piece those in. If anyone has good suggestions I would love to hear them.

> Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're not in the US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

  • I am in Florida, USA.

> If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc.), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

  • The endgame is to have an all new setup. I have some Dell monitors and keyboard laying around that I might use for a bit after the tower is done, just until I can get some nicer ones.

> Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?

  • I have absolutely no idea honestly. I will leave that opinion up to you all who have far more experience in this than me.

> Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc.)

  • A decent amount of local storage would be great just because I plan to use it primarily for business. I am planning to build a network rack with the router, NVR, and a NAS setup that I would like my computer to be able to access.

> Are there any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, style, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

  • My office is going to be themed kind of "outdoorsy" since I am a very outdoors-oriented person so if I could have something that fits in with that than I think that would be an awesome bonus. I personally like to describe it as like a "modern outdoors" looks with wood accents but still the "modern technology aspects. I'll have a wood-top desk, and the overall lighting isn't going to be a super bright white more of a mellow tone if that helps with anything. I have seen some builds that have LED's in them and like that look quite a bit. A window on the side to see all the interior components would also be cool. As far as size goes, I would guess something like a mid-tower would be appropriate for what my goal is? Again I have very little experience so I am very open to suggestions.

> Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

  • No, this budget is only for the main tower components. The other aspects I can account for separately.

>Extra info or particulars:

  • Thank you again to anyone who can provide me support and help walk me through this. I know the basics and theory behind most of this stuff as I have always been very interested in it and now I finally get the chance to build a PC for myself, I just have no idea about the practical approach to doing so. Feel free to DM me or respond with any questions you might have and again thank you in advance for your assistance!
