Any quick look at my current rig here and you'll quickly find that i have a pretty decent-sized CPU bottleneck to deal with due to the new RTX card I snagged. My thing is, I'm finding it hard to decide which CPU to grab, especially given the timing. On top of that, recently I've been upgrading a lot of individual parts and I'm left with a few consistent performance issues I can almost guarantee boil down to this old CPU of mine. Now from what I've gathered the only reason my CPU is an issue here is because I'm running 1080p @ 144hz, however given the situation it's cheaper (and more future-proof) to upgrade my CPU than to upgrade my monitors. So I mentioned timing; AMD has been talking about the new Ryzen Threadrippers coming in November. With that in mind, I'm looking at 3 options right now, each with some pros and cons:
Intel i9 9900k
Pros:
-In-stock at most retailers
-I'm comfortable with Intel architecture
-"Cheapest" option at around $450 USD
-Well optimized for a 1080p 144Hz environment
Cons:
-"Lowest" performance compared to other options
-Least longevity
-Only 8 physical cores
AMD Ryzen 3900x
Pros:
-Amazing across-the-board performance
-12 physical cores
-Decent future-proofing
Cons:
-MSRP price unavailable at all major retailers
-Scalper prices unreasonable for budget
AMD Ryzen 3000 Threadripper Series
Pros:
-Highest performance by a significant margin
-Highest future-proofing
Cons:
-Prices unavailable and will likely be very expensive
-Likelihood of availability issues on launch
-Current CPU issues will persist for another ~2 months
My budget is sitting around $500 USD, and at some level I'm fine with going over but it needs to be well worth it, which is not really the case with the 3900x. I've already kind of soft-locked into the i9, as I stated that I feel comfortable with Intel architecture, but I felt like I could reach out to you guys and get your opinions. I do understand that this new CPU will require a Mobo upgrade to go with it, and that's already on my mind alongside a new case and PSU. Worth noting that I do intend to get into live streaming in the future, however I won't be the one to do the video editing. Lemme know your thoughts, thanks in advance for any time.
