Need to upgrade old rig. (I have no idea what I'm doing)
Post Body

A few years ago my buddy decided to build a new pc. I decided to buy his old rig and upgrade it to get into learning how to build. I would pick parts and he would tell me if they would work or not. It was great. Well that was years ago and at the time I lived in japan. Between shipping the pc all over the world to get it to where I am now and not using it for about a year due to deployment my gpu crashed. I kinda lost my cool and threw a temper tantrum like a toddler on pcp in a candy store when his mom said no. Decided I didn't need a pc for a while. Welp. Here I am....wanting a pc. Current specs are:

CPU: AMD phenom 2 x6 1055t 2.80ghz 8 gb of ram MOBO: Asus m5a97 rev 1.02 Water cooler: h100i gtx Gpu: msi gtx 970.

I'm not trying to spend a ton of money but I would like to know what everyone would to to upgrade this a little bit. I do a little gaming like GTA 5 and PUBG. I also do generic stuff like stream crap and surf the web. I don't need something that can play 4k and 60fps but I'd like to have something that plays nice. I was thinking maybe a 1070 or 1080 gpu because that's my current issue for not using it but like I said I have no idea what I'm doing. Thanks for all the suggestions in advance!
