Advice on upgrading motherboard and processor

Post Body

Hi all!

I noticed that when I play Overwatch it stutters because my processor is pretty old, and it's frustrating to play like that.

Here are the specs of my current PC:

CPU: AMD A4-5300

Motherboard: ASUSTek A88XM-A (FM2 )

GPU: AMD R9 380, 2GB

RAM: 12 GB DDR3 @ 664MHz

So I think to replace the processor, I need to replace the motherboard; I'd like something fairly future proof but also relatively inexpensive. If I could spend max. $300 that would be great. I'm not looking for anything fancy, I just need to run newish games smoothly at 1920x1080. Ideally, I want the most value for money. I'm not sure if I should go for an i5 or an i7, or if AMD provides better options considering what I have. I'd really like to make the system good for a few years.

I'm also trying to make this as painless as possible - it used to be that changing a motherboard meant having to reinstall the OS, is this still the case? My OS is Windows 10.

Thanks for all your help - I'm a bit lost with what some good options are.
