Build Upgrade:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yep.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Vidya gaemz, specifically Star Citizen. Most of the other games I play perform adequately on my current build, although they could always perform better.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, FPS, game settings)

1080p, 60 fps, high-ultra-ish settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

~$300-400 CAD? I can be flexible with this, as I'm not necessarily looking to upgrade everything immediately, nor all at once.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Canada

Here's my current build, an upgraded Dell Inspiron 660..

CPU: Intel Core i5-3330 @ 3.00 GHz

GPU: MSI NVIDIA GeForce 750 Ti 2.00 GB

Motherboard: Dell 0XR1GT A00

RAM: 2x Samsung 4.00 GB DDR3 M378B5273DH0-CK0 (8.00 GB total, 7.87 GB useable)

SSD: Samsung 850 EVA 1.00 TB SSD

HDD: Seagate ST1000DM003-1CH162 1.00 TB HDD

PSU: Thermaltake TR2 TR-500 500W ATX12V v2.3

Monitor #1: Samsung SAM0B65 Generic PnP Monitor 1920x1080 (20.5")

Monitor #2: Dell 2007FP 1600x1200 (20.1")

OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home Built 14393 (Anniversary Update)

KB M: Cooler Master Octane SGB-3020-KKMF1-US

Here's some of the upgrade options I'm considering..

I'm primarily looking to upgrade my graphics card (and likely my PSU with it), but if there's anything else in my current build that is either really crappy, grossly outdated, or just plain mediocre, I'd like to upgrade that as well. I know my motherboard is a bit old and sketchy, but I have no idea what would be a good replacement for it, and I don't have an infinite budget to upgrade it with.

For graphics cards, right now I'm mainly looking at either an Radeon RX 480 or a GeForce GTX 1060, but any other suggestions are welcome. I do have a few specific questions about these cards, though.

  • For brands, are there any issues with Zotac cards? They seem to be lower priced than other brands, and I don't know if that's because they're lower quality, or because other brands charge a premium for brand name recognition.

  • In an expansion of the last question, are there any specific brands or models I should prefer or avoid (for being under/overpriced, having excellent/poor reliability/performance, etc)?

  • How important is having lots of VRAM? The 1060 has both 3 GB and 6 GB versions, and the price difference is close enough that I'd be willing to jump to a 6 GB version if 3 GB would be noticeably worse.

  • Does anyone have recommendations for PSU brands/models? I'm not well-versed in which are considered good quality or not, and I've heard all the horror stories of sucky PSUs spontaneously combusting, but I also don't want to spend extra for a 'premium' brand when a cheaper option is just as good.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I wish we had 'Murican prices up here in Canada.
