[Build Help] Gentrification of an old point of sale machine

Post Body

Howdy /r/buildapc,

I recently came into possession of an old HP rp5000 point of sale PC that had been sitting in storage for 8 years. I have intentions to turn it into a media center, NAS, miscellaneous home server machine and I know everything part and software wise that I need to get this done. With one exception. To be honest, I've only ever worked with more recent and "modern" hardware so I wanted to switch the motherboard out to something more up-to-date but due to this both being a POS machine and close to a decade old, I am unsure what size to use in this particular situation.

The specs are not that particularly helpful here:

System Board Form Factor: custom

System Board Form Factors Supported: Custom point of sale

... so I thought I might ask you fine folks and see if anyone has any experience with one of these (relatively) archaic machines and their custom sized motherboards.

Everything seems to be still in pretty good condition, most notably the hefty, high quality, 185W integrated power supply, and I realllllly like the modularity of the case but if it can't be done then so be it. I could try to work around this and work with the older hardware but... but:

  • 80 GB Ultra ATA (think PATA but modified by Western Digital) HDD

  • 400-MHz, 128KB L2 cache 2.0-GHz

  • 512 MB DDR

Anyone know a motherboard size that I could substitute?
