[Discussion] Is there a way to gauge how good a graphics card is that I'm not seeing?

I posted a few days ago about asking how out of date my graphics card is.

But I realized as I was looking at newer cards to buy, I have no idea how to gauge how good this card is compared to my old one.

I could go to a site that compares models but thats a pretty slow and tedious process. Is there a way just by looking at it's name, or description that I can see how much better one graphics card is compared to another?

Or is it just a matter of being "In the know" and keeping up with different models and series, and knowing when something is new and better?
