Monitor connection problem

My monitor isn't connecting to my brand new pc that arrived TODAY. The monitor is also brand new. I've tried both the vga and dvi cable (no hdmi to try) and neither one works!!! It always comes up with a message saying "vga/dv (whichever one is connected) no connection" I know how to switch the monitors mode to the cable being used, so thats not an issue. What is wrong??!?!?! How do i fix this?!??!
