I feel like I am the only person on the planet that uses the reddit app in slideover mode, as this bug has not only persisted through all of iPadOS 17, and into iPadOS 18, but it is now actually worse. I will do my absolute best to describe this very, very annoying bug.
So, first, what is slideover? Slideover is one of the multitasking modes in iPad OS. It is when an app is used only as a floating 1/4 version on either side of your overall screen, the other two views being split view (when two apps are used simultaneously, each taking up one half of the screen), and full screen, when the app in question is the only app being used. This bug literally only affects the reddit app in slideover, and has existed, for me, for probably more than two years now. I am presently using iPadOS 18.1, but this issue was present in iPadOS 17, and I think may have begun in iPadOS 16, but I can’t say that with confidence. I am currently using an iPad Pro 13" M4, but have previously used the iPad Pro 12.9" M2, and M1 (and each previous model before those). I am using the most recent reddit update, and this issue persists across hard closing the app, as well as restarting the device.
So, with all of that said, here is the issue. When using reddit in slideover mode, the button for "chat" at the bottom of the app, can’t be clicked, at all. Previously, in iPadOS 17, it was possible to click it, if you touched the screen in a very, very specific part of the button, but that has since stopped being the case. As I write this, I am typing this on the web site, as I test in my reddit app, in slideover, to make sure I get all of this right. I will say, I use the reddit app for iPad exclusively in slideover, and almost exclusively for the chat feature, so this particular bug is exceptionally annoying, though it doesn’t completely break functionality. While testing, I have also concluded that it isn’t just "chat" that can’t be clicked, it is also "communities." So, with the reddit app open, in slideover, if you tap "home," that button works. If you tap "inbox," that button works. If you try to tap either "communities," or "chat," the app registers as you tapping "create," and neither "communities" or "chat" can be accessed at all. The workaround, is that if you switch to split view or full screen, both buttons work correctly, and you can then switch back to slideover, and you will remain in "chat" or "communities" until you navigate away, or the app restarts. In iPadOS 17, "chat" was clickable if you tapped to the absolute right hand side of the word chat, as close to the word inbox as possible. That no longer works. Tapping any part of the toolbar of the app to the right of "home," or to the left of "inbox," results in the app registering a tap to "create."
Being that this has now persisted for the better part of two years, and this bug has not existed forever, I have to assume that either not a lot of people use reddit in slideover, or no one on the dev team cares enough to fix it. Or, it is possible, I am the only person on the planet experiencing this bug. In any case, I would love to see this addressed, or if somehow every device and every version of iPadOS for the last 2 years has been somehow broken.
Edit: I am continuing to play with everything even after typing all of that. I can register a chit to both "chat" and "communities," and this is the first time in quite a long time I have been able to. But the app is not registering the clicks where it should, meaning, not on the button itself. For "communities," you have to click almost exactly in the middle of home and communities, and for "chat," you have to click to the right of the word chat, almost in the middle between chat and inbox. The pixel windows for these clicks registering should not be nearly this narrow, or nearly this off center of the actual buttons.
