Question about Mistery Dungeon "level check"

This will be my first time playing Pokémon Mistery Dungeon Blue and I don't really know a lot about these games. Since the next episode will be about them I want to start playing along this week but i don't know how long are you going to progress on the story.
Mainline games do have badges but MD don't, how far into the game are we going to do the first checkpoint?
